I’ve gone off script!
But that’s okay - it was necessary.
The “official schedule” that I made up in its entirety was:
Days 1-3: character development.
Days 4-9: thumbnails and various scenes
Day 10: a finished portfolio piece.
It’s day 5, and I am going back to character development.
The way I see it (and please don’t quote me on this because, like the schedule, I’ve 100% made this up based on nothing other than how I think it should be).
Fine art should make you feel something - the story is in the background layers; the feelings are up front.
Illustration tells the story up front, alongside text, and the emotion comes from the whole package.
With that distinction in mind, I need to find the basic shapes and simplest forms not only in Roxy but in the trees, the leaves, and the overall scene.
Roxy’s head is a giant chonking block of bone, her ears are expressive tortilla chips, her neck is a thick cone, she has a barrel for a chest, and wee thin little ankles. I have absolutely no idea how they support her.
I’m okay backtracking because that’s what a 100-day project is for: focused learning.
And I’ve already identified an important factor in illustrating!
GO ME!
To simplify Roxy’s shape, I tapped into the most basic illustration lessons.
Draw in shapes and then find the dominant line.
Draw from memory as much as possible.
Yesterday I attended Art Gym, and the guest instructor was Tom Froese.
I’ve taken several of Tom’s Skillshare classes, and they're all really good (now I feel like I should take them all again), but I was reminded that illustration is a two-part process.
Draw from a reference image and then draw the same image from memory.
The parts that you forget and make up are where the interesting, fun parts come from.
With all of this in mind, I’ve updated my Milanote Board, and I found a way to share the full board with you!
