Each Painting Has a Story

I think all my painting stories start with “I was on the beach…,”

This one is no different. I approached the Agate Beach entrance from the lower parking lot, and the scene that greeted me was these eight distinct stripes.

My camera captured more details than my eyes did. My eyes were blurry from wind-induced tears. It looked like only five stripes.

Sky

Marine Layer

Indathrine Blue Water

White Water

Sand

I was inspired to try a stripped-back minimalist painting that indicated what I saw vs. what my camera saw because, while simple, the distinct layers of color were striking.

I painted this painting fast with little preparation. I was going for a loose, easy watery look. I most enjoy the liquid quality of the sky and the dark bold strokes in the water.

It was a fun experiment and different from my usual style of watercolor. Interestingly, it looks much like one of my encaustic wax paintings. I think it’s neat how these two wildly different mediums are starting to meet in the middle.

What can I say? I like stripes!
